Colonoscopy is the video camera examination of the colon. The specialist “drives” the camera to examine the whole colon lining. Meticulous inspection is important to detect an abnormality or to ensure that the colon is “clear”. Excellent bowel preparation is an important part of the colonoscopy so that abnormalities are visible.
Gastroenterology Associates Miranda specialists consult with their patients prior to the day of the colonoscopy (predominantly in person but videoconsultation is used for some patients). This ensures that there is a full understanding of the patient’s symptoms, history and expectations. The place of colonoscopy in the patient’s management is explained in detail and the process of colonoscopy is thoroughly explained. Detailed written instructions are provided, and an informed consent is obtained.
Direct Access Colonoscopy (DAC) or Rapid Access Colonoscopy can be requested by your referring General Practitioner. This process is available if there are straightforward reasons to perform colonoscopy. These reasons include a positive faecal occult blood test (blood detected in poo test), colon polyp surveillance and a family history of bowel cancer surveillance. Generally the patient would have minimal symptoms to interpret and manage, and have minimal other health issues. GAM will review the GP referral and may suggest that a formal consultation is more appropriate.
The colonoscopy itself is usually done as a “day procedure”, performed under a light general anaesthetic, administered by a specialist anaesthetist. There is usually no experience or recollection of the actual procedure. Due to the anaesthetic, it is necessary for the patient not to drive for 24 hours.
